One of the messages we internalize from being victims of sexual abuse or assault is that we have no value or worth; that we must have been a mistake. This message plays over and over in our hearts, and though we may have surrendered our lives to Christ at some point, many of us still struggle with our identity.
The fact is God doesn’t make mistakes, he creates masterpieces!
The Bible teaches us that God took great care in creating each one of us. We were known by God from our very beginnings…before we ever breathed our first breath….before we ever chose to follow Him.
When I discovered the truth of my beginnings in God’s Word, it began to shape how I perceive my value and worth. I began to see my true identity. There are so many scriptures that apply here, but Psalms 139:13-15 seems to express this truth best:
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well. My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. (ESV)
When those old messages start playing in your head tune them out and remind yourself that you are fearfully and wonderfully made, on purpose, by a loving Creator who knows you better than you know yourself, and loves you as you are today. The beauty of God’s love is that he loves us too much to leave us in our current state…He will always lead us into a deeper relationship with Him, and gently shape us into a beautiful reflection of Himself.
God doesn’t make mistakes, he creates masterpieces!
