Oh! The power of forgiveness.
Ok. Let me just say that I am still on a learning curve when it comes to the concept of forgiveness. I understand that God has forgiven me for all my junk, and in turn I need to quickly forgive others of their offenses against me, but….
Do you struggle with the “but” too? Am I alone in my learning curve?
I can say I forgive those that have hurt me, but I struggle with emotionally forgiving them. I’m talking about really forgiving. Not the, “Oh sure, I forgive that person” but then every time you hear their name your whole body tenses up and you struggle to find kind words and happy thoughts? Do you know that feeling? I think anyone who is human, and has been deeply hurt by someone, can identify with what I’m talking about.
Forgiving our offender, whoever they may be, has the power to release us from the past hurt. But, it has to be the real deal. No “buts.” Jesus says, “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn. Live in harmony with one another…do not repay evil for evil…as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone.” This Scripture basically sums up how we need to forgive when we are hurt. To truly forgive means that we not only forgive mentally, but emotionally as well. It’s a choice, a daily choice, we make to love others with the unconditional love we’ve received from God, through his son Jesus Christ. When we make this choice we release ourselves from the hurt of the past.
Ugh! That word forgiveness…but, Oh! The power it has to heal us!
Who do you need to forgive today? Are you ready to take that step and get past the past?
